Why the Electric Berry Lemonade is the Worst Drink at Jamba Juice

Looking for a low sugar Jamba Juice drink? Don’t order the new Electric Berry Lemonade.

Spring has sprung and we’re not exactly sure what that means since we live in Florida and well, we only have one season. But, for the rest of the country, everyone is putting away their parkas and trading them for flip flops and tank tops. This also means every fast-casual establishment and their mother is breaking out the limited edition spring flavors to make you feel like you aren’t living through the final stages of global warming. And, Jamba Juice is no different as they announced the re-release of their springtime smoothie, Electric Berry Lemonade.

Electric Berry Lemonade Stand

Lemonade is the quintessential summer drink as portrayed by tv shows and movies showing children participating in voluntary child labor with roadside lemonade stands. While these amateur lemonades only cost less than a dollar (someone needs to teach them about inflation), smoothie chains like Jamba Juice, have taken this springtime refreshment turned it blue, dumped a whole lot of sugar in it, and are charging $6.29 for a small cup.

While this beverage may be blue and cute, it also contains more sugar than the average candy bar, weighing in at 1/2 a cup of sugar (51 grams) for a small, 3/4 cup of sugar for a medium (77 grams) and about 1 cup for a large (91 grams).

Don’t believe us? See for yourself:

Electric Berry Lemonade Candy Bars
  • Snickers – 20 grams of sugar
  • Kit-Kat – 21 grams of sugar
  • 100 Grand – 22 grams of sugar
  • Crunch Bar – 23 grams of sugar
  • Almond Joy – 24 grams of sugar
  • Twix – 24 grams of sugar
  • Milky Way – 35 grams of sugar
  • Three Musketeers – 40 grams of sugar

BUT IT’S BLUE! Yes, the only redeeming quality of this cavity-inducing drink is the fact that it contains blue spirulina powder (and two fruits), which may make you think of healthy blue smoothie bowls, but this drink is far from anything healthy.

Let’s break down the ingredients of the Electric Berry Lemonade, shall we?

Electric Berry Lemonade Sugar
  • Lemonade – The Jamba Juice lemonade recipe is probably the mist of one lemon and a whole lot of sugar.
  • Strawberries – They did add frozen fruit to this beverage. So you could ask for an Electric Berry Lemonade with just strawberries and blue spirulina.
  • Grape pear berry juice blend – Any juice berry blend might as well be labeled as flavored sugar water
  • Fat-free vanilla frozen yogurt – If you think this is healthy, you’re wrong. When something is labeled fat-free, extra sugar is added to make it more flavorful. Anyway, next.
  • Raspberry sherbet – Some nice, raspberry-flavored ice cream.
  • Peaches –  Another frozen fruit was used in the making of this drink. How generous of them!
  • Blue spirulina – The scoop of blue spirulina powder used doesn’t take away from the fact that the rest of the drink is filled with sugar.

Jamba Juice markets this drink as Shockingly Refreshing probably because after you drink your 1/2 cup of sugar, you’re body will be experiencing so many side effects of said sugar that you’ll experience cardiac arrest and the EMTs will need to shock you to bring you back to life. But, it is a cold beverage, so we understand how the refreshing part came into play, especially during warmer months, during the marketing brainstorm for this icy sugar juice.

While this is one Jamba Juice drink we will stay far away from, there are a few drinks on their menu that aren’t a candy bar in a cup.

Anyway, cheers to spring.
